MAFS season 13 and guess who is moving on August 1st?!
It's meeee! Do you wanna see my apartment? But also I gotta talk a little about the Married at First Sight Season 13 premiere
Hey everyone!!
I had to take an unexpectedly long hiatus because life got crazy and I started to feel very burned out again. But some really exciting things have happened recently!!
The new season of Married at First Sight premiered yesterday and I can already tell it’s going to be delicious
I’m moving into a one bedroom apartment!!
I’ll dive into the whole apartment thing later (also, paid subscribers get to view the walk through of my apartment EEEEEEEE! Spoiler, the bathroom is floor to ceiling granite that looks like marble). I also bought a red silk robe so I am prepared to be the most luxurious and no one will be able to tell me anything.
But more about that later.
I don’t want to spoil anything about last night’s episode of MAFS season 13 but I do want to talk about one brief moment that I’m so happy they kept in the episode. So there’s a couple whose names are Michaela and Zack. Now I’m already obsessed with Michaela. Not only to i need to be her friend but I hope everyone clearly understands that all Black women are undeniably gorgeous. Like every single Black woman they have put on this show makes me hold up my hand in praise towards the screen and scream YES SIS!
Michaela is currently my everything. Moving forward.
Zack is the guy that she is matched with and he said something that resonated so deeply with me. As he was trying on suits with his crew he said:
“What if I’m not the height, the build, the skin tone that she wants.”
It was such a vulnerable moment and it made me so sad.
Obviously colorism (much like racism, capitalism and all the other evils of the world) work for nobody’s benefit. It’s easy to think that only women are affected by colorism but clearly that’s not true. Zack is a dark skinned Black name who is objectively gorgeous but even he still has the concern of “what if my wife thinks I’m too dark to be attractive to her?”
Obviously, colorism affects women more directly than men. This is largely because the patriarchy forces women’s beauty to be equal to (if not more influential than) currency to us. The more beautiful a woman is, the more opportunities that woman gets. In some cultures, women have to hand in a headshot with a resume to a job application and they can be dismissed because they aren’t pretty enough (seriously, look it up). When you add racism, colorism and featurism into the mix it becomes very easy to turn a person (regardless of their gender) into a collection of valuable and invaluable parts. Yea, read that sentence again because it’s gross and it’s a portion of what Zack was talking about.
Zack’s brief moment of honesty also allowed me to voice a concern that I constantly have when dating. How will my skin tone be perceived to the person I’m dating? Do they feel negatively about my relative darkness or lightness as a Black woman? Is there a fetish involved? These feelings do not go away even when I am on a date with a Black man. That’s how insidious colorism is.
Anyway, I think this season is going to be very entertaining and I already have my favorite individuals (Michaela and someone you’ll have to guess) and my favorite couples. I also don’t think this season will be as historically toxic as last season, which is nice. I will say this though:
Chris, wherever you are, I need a follow up on how terrible your life is now. Like where are you? How are you? Tell me.
That’s all for now folx!
And paid subscribers!! If you want to have a whole HGTV moment with my gorg new apartment, that email will be dropping into your mailboxes at 12PM so look out!
