What I recently learned about buying meat in Mexico (it’s weirdly difficult)
It genuinely took me a week to figure out where to buy meat in Playa Del Carmen. Most of the supermarkets only sell cold cuts so I was super confused where everyone was getting their beef, chicken, and other delicious animals. Then I heard about carnecerias (meat shops) and was told to go to one called SuKarne (a popular chain of carnecerias). HUGE mistake. Have you ever looked at meat, knew it was definitely not meat, said a silent prayer, and ate it anyway only to find out that your actions have consequences? Yea…there were consequences. By that point I was getting hangry because it shouldn’t be this hard to make a burger. One of my neighbors told me that there’s a pollería (a poultry shop) very close to our apartment where a guy gets live chickens in the morning and by 10AM you can get all the cuts of chicken you need. It literally doesn’t get more fresh and farm-to-table than that. She also told me that in the big, fancy supermarket in town (which is also walking distance) I can get whatever cuts of meat I need. Low-and-behold, there were all my needed proteins. Now that I’m more settled and have finally correctly labeled all of my spices, I can start my newest adventure: me becoming the next Julia Childs (I’m absolutely kidding, please don’t take that seriously).
Takeaway: If you visit anywhere in Quintana Roo, DON’T get meat at a SuKarne.
📣An HTA business owner was recently on the red carpet!
Now, I’m not saying that this founder got this job opportunity because they were featured on my newsletter but…I mean…maybe. Basically, Misha, the founder of @melonbun.nails (an anime-inspired press on nails company) was officially worn by Stephanie Hsu on the red carpet!! If you were breathing during 2022, you know that Everything, Everywhere, All at Once was a blockbuster hit that shutdown theaters for weeks on end. And Stephanie Hsu, who played Joy in the movie, was spotted on the red carpet for an event wearing custom nails from @melonbun.nails!!! I feel like a proud mama.

How did you get into the world of makeup? Did you also like it as a kid or was it a passion that blossomed later in life?
I loved make up very early on in my childhood. My mother was a teacher of fashion. So I was always surrounded by the high fashion magazines vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, etc. I decided to study fashion photography in college. It wasn’t easy, finding makeup artists, but since I already loved make up, I would do a lot of the make up myself.
Does your product ship internationally now or only domestically within the USA?
Yes it sure does [ship internationally].
From the bio on your website you explained how social media was a pivotal part of fine-tuning and launching OMGLO to the point where it was being requested around the globe. How did it feel to have such an overwhelming response to your product? Was there something you wish you knew/prepared before your product went viral?
When my video first went viral, I panicked. I actually got so scared that I deleted the video (I know, not a good idea). But fortunately, my mentor reposted it and it kept getting views. I didn’t know how to handle going viral and, honestly, to this day I still don’t. I’m a very introverted person. I am very private and I don’t really love having all eyes on me. But I love teaching and that’s the part of going viral that I feel is the most important; that I am helping. Someone understands something better, that’s the one thing about going viral that helps me not be so overwhelmed by it. So, I guess, if there was one thing I wish I could’ve known about going viral, it’s to take it as an experience of learning.
As someone who is a content creator, a professional makeup artist, and a founder of a beauty brand, do you have any marketing tips for people who are just starting off in the beauty industry?
You have to believe in yourself, and have faith that everything will work out. Even if you have no idea what you’re doing don’t be afraid to ask for help and there’s an answer literally for anything you wanna know.
Do you have a go-to product from your collection? AKA which of your babies is your favorite?
I use Suga glow serum & incredible glow spray pretty much daily. My favorite gloss shade is WERK.
Did you always work in the beauty industry or did you do something else before entering this field? If so, can you share about your transition (the excitement, the concerns, the thing that made you say "imma do it NOW", etc)?
I always try to find work, surrounded by the beauty industry whether it was receptionist work at a hair salon or reception at a med spa. It’s something I’ve always been drawn towards.
A beauty tip for the readers: What's one beauty/skincare tip that you wish more people knew about and could greatly improve their beauty regime?
That you really don’t need a primer. You really need is a good skin care routine to prep your skin for make up.
BRAG TIME: If you have any awards, accomplishments, things that you're just proud of that you've done, any new things coming up on the horizon, etc. here is the place to share and brag about yourself and how awesome you are!
I would say, my highest achieving moment was when I found out that Makeup Artist brought my product to the set of a Beyoncé production. Even though the queen didn’t wear my product, it made it on to one of the models who was later featured on Beyoncé’s website. I think I cried for two days.
Where can we find you?
🚨 Calling all jewelry makers for future features
Are you a jewelry maker? Do you know a woman who is a jewelry maker? I’m going to be generous this month and open the door for all women of color to submit themselves to be featured in an upcoming newsletter for women’s history month (March). Most of the women who submit themselves find me on TikTok but, because I keep getting shadowbanned for highlighting WOC owned businesses, I figured I might as well call for pitches here. If you are, or know, someone who makes jewelry and wants to be featured in an upcoming newsletter for free, comment some info about your business below and I’ll message you for more info :)
