Welcome Back, NYC Drama Book Store!
an inside look at everything that changed and all the magic that stayed the same
This lil number is going to be short and sweet.
THE DRAMA BOOKSTORE IS BACK AND IT’S SO PRETTY!!
A friend of mine, who is an entertainment writer, invited me to be her plus-one to the grand opening and Lin Manuel-Miranda and his team really put the work in to make this place amazing! Here are some pictures :)
This is the first thing that you see when you walk into the store. Yes, they are all real books and, yes, the Harry Potter vibes were palpable. Also, I was wearing a VERY cute outfit and got two compliments right next to this art piece so it now means something special to me.
If you were wondering “where could that aerial stream of books be leading to?” well here is your answer. Also, the books do spiral around the store more before they explode against the wall. Trust me, it looks even cooler in person. Also, let’s take a moment to appreciate Green Shirt giving me over-the-shoulder realness.
Obviously, at this point I was very excited and in need of a bathroom trip. If you have gone to the OG Drama Book Store then you know that they are all about their gender inclusive bathrooms. What you might not know is that now there are about 4 bathrooms total so no more lines (PRAISE HIM!)
But Shayna, what else is new?
Ok. Check this out. MERCH. They have SOOOO much merch now it’s insane. Along with this wall of goodies, they also have drama-based cards, notebooks, pens and more. Like, it is your one-stop-shop for all things drama. Personally, I didn’t know I needed this until I saw it. Full disclosure, I was too excited about the wall of notepads to remember to take a picture. Don’t be mad, I’m sensitive.
They also have a cafe (complete with baked goods and the nicest staff ever)!
Even though so much has changed between the past and present Drama Book Store, much of the staff hasn’t! You remember the precious older white guy who had the dog (you know, the guy that usually ran the cash register)? Well, he’s still there (along with a few others! Now that there is a full service cafe in the shop, the puppy is no longer allowed to just chill BUT he will always be there in spirit.
Basically, this trip helped to clear my skin and hydrate my scalp. 10 out of 10 would recommend going in, sitting on a couch (there are at least 8 seating areas now!) and making a theatrically inclined friend.
Gentle reminder, if you want to support me, my writing career and the Black owned businesses associated with Heart to Arts, please consider becoming a paid subscriber. It’s on’t $5 a month and you get so many goodies when they become available!
